Cyc-Ability Success:

Securing Funds to Grow Our Inclusive Cycling Programme!

At Heart of England Mencap, we are committed to creating opportunities for people with learning disabilities to stay active, connected, and confident in their community. Our Thursday Cyc-Ability sessions are a perfect example of this in action - and we’re delighted to share some exciting news about their future.

Over recent months, we have seen a significant increase in attendance at our weekly sessions, particularly from wheelchair users. While this growth has been fantastic, it also highlighted a real challenge: the high demand for our wheelchair-accessible trike, which has often meant waiting times and limited availability for participants.

To help meet this need, we applied for funding from Sport England’s Movement Fund to purchase an additional wheelchair trike, along with other essential equipment. We are absolutely thrilled to announce that our application was successful, and we have been awarded the full £7,310 we requested!

This achievement was made even more special thanks to the incredible support from our local community. In particular, we would like to extend a huge thank you to Matt and the team at Think Active, who provided a letter of support as part of our application. Having strong community backing can make a real difference when applying for grants, and we are so grateful for their continued encouragement and belief in our work.

The funding has allowed us to purchase a second wheelchair-accessible trike, significantly improving access and reducing waiting times for our participants. In addition, part of the grant will be used to acquire two more bicycles for support workers, volunteers, and for members who are ready to transition from three wheels to two — supporting progression, confidence, and independence.

Kate and a few members taking a well-earned pause at Cyc-Ability!

Our Thursday Cyc-Ability session is now almost at capacity, which is fantastic to see and a real testament to its success. As a result, we are already exploring opportunities to introduce additional sessions during the week or possibly the weekends - watch this space and I’ll keep you updated!” Kate - Project Lead.

Finally, we would like to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has supported Cyc-Ability. From our dedicated members who attend each week along with their families and carers, to our committed support workers and wonderful volunteers who give their time and energy - you all play a vital role in making these sessions so special. We’d also like to thank the Stratford community, who never fail to stop, say hello, and encourage our cyclists along the way.

This funding represents more than just new equipment — it’s an investment in inclusion, wellbeing, and opportunity. We can’t wait to see even more people enjoying the freedom and joy of cycling.
