Trustee Away Day

We know that great teamwork is the hallmark of the best and most successful organisations.

Having been successful in recruiting new members to our Board of Trustees, arranging an opportunity to welcome them into Heart of England Mencap was the next step to building an effective leadership team with the commitment and passion for achieving our mission.

With that in mind, we were delighted to bring the Board together in-person for the first time in more than a year since the first lockdown, for a local ‘Away Day’.

Led by Rob Pearce, as the newly appointed Chair of the Board of Trustees, and our CEO Helena Wallis, this was a pivotal moment for both the executive team and the trustees; building on our plans to continue the successful journey the charity has already made to achieve our mission - to empower people with a learning disability to live their most fulfilling life.

Our work to support people during one of the most challenging times has continued and as a Board of Trustees, much of their work goes on ‘behind the scenes’ and yet is absolutely critical to demonstrating good and effective governance and leadership of the charity.

The Board has continued to work effectively throughout the pandemic too, in some cases meeting ‘virtually’ on a daily basis!

As we know the health and social care landscape will continue to challenge care providers, it is recognised that we need to continue to build the leadership strengths that can take the charity forward into the future.

Our new Trustee team brings together a more diverse range of skills, knowledge and experiences that can support the existing strengths we already have.

One of the key aims is to ensure that we continue to have the voice of those with ‘lived experience’ on our Board, and part of the Away Day involved two of our family representative Trustees sharing their stories.

We owe a huge thank you to our Trustees for bringing their wealth of skills, experience and commitment to our charity.

The output of our Away Day will be shared with our teams across the organisation as we move forward.
